Full Access to Every Top-Rope Wall
Top-rope climbing uses ropes anchored above you, so you are always protected, making it the ideal way to start climbing on taller walls. This two-session induction teaches you the rope skills, safety checks, and belaying technique to climb and supervise others safely. It is the most complete introduction to indoor rock climbing safety procedures we offer to beginners, and a popular choice for adults starting from scratch or wanting to belay their children.
Course Content
Spread across two sessions, the first being 1.5 hours and the second 2 hours this induction builds your skills progressively. By session two you’ll be belaying confidently and ready to climb independently with a partner.

Foundations
- Movement basics and safe falling technique
- Introduction to harness fitting and rope systems
- Tying in safely with a figure-of-eight knot
- Belaying: feeding rope, holding falls, lowering
- Safety checks before every climb
- Communication with your partner on the wall
Testing
- Testing and refreshing all material learnt in Session 1
- Drilling and training any weak technique or safety procedures
- Bouldering wall rules, etiquette and safety
- Auto-belay use and safety
Rental equipment and a day pass are included in the price of both sessions. The registration fee (€10) is included and covers your permanent registration at the centre.
What to do if you don’t have a climbing partner
The Top-Rope Induction requires a minimum of two participants, but that does not necessarily mean you need to bring someone. On Wednesday evenings starting at 7pm we run a dedicated Induction Night where we pair solo adults for the induction course. Two sessions are required and pre-booking is essential.

Lead climbing
Once you are climbing consistently at f5c on top-rope and have at least 6-months’ belaying experience, the natural next step is our Learn to Lead Climb course which teaches you to climb and belay on lead, and begins the process of progressing to outdoor sport climbing too.
Alternatively, if you would like a more guided introduction from the very beginning, our Learn to Climb course covers all this top-rope induction material plus technique coaching, and includes a free month’s membership on completion.
It’s an awesomely run place full of passionate instructors… everyone is encouraging and the fitness level needed to start is not too high at all. Loved the induction course and now enjoying the Ladies Night… I’m hooked. literally. 😀
Common Questions
Do both participants need to book, or just me?
Both participants need to be booked in and present for both sessions. The minimum in our booking system online is for 2 participants. If you do not have a partner, book the Wednesday Induction Night.
Is this suitable for complete beginners?
Yes, no prior experience is needed, although it is recommended to have tried climbing before. Session one starts from scratch and builds up progressively. Many of our members started with this induction.
What’s the difference between this and the Bouldering & Auto-Belay Induction?
The Bouldering & Auto-Belay Induction covers bouldering and auto-belay routes only and can be done alone. This induction covers all of that plus full rope skills and belaying, giving you access to the top-rope walls and the ability to supervise other climbers on all walls.
What’s the difference between this and the Learn to Climb course?
Both qualify you for the same independent access. The Learn to Climb course is four sessions rather than two, goes deeper into climbing technique and movement, and includes a free month’s membership on completion. It is the better choice if you want a more personalised coached, gradual introduction to the sport.
Can I supervise my children after this induction?
Yes. After this induction you can supervise up to 2 under-18s on all walls, including the top-rope walls. You can supervise 2 adults on top-rope walls only (not bouldering walls)
What should I wear?
Comfortable sports clothing and clean trainers. Climbing shoes and harness are provided. Rings must be removed before climbing; long hair should be tied back.
